Short test: Mini Cooper SD (5 doors)

Oh, how much easier it used to be. When someone mentioned the Mini, you knew exactly which model they were talking about. Now? Yeah, do you have a Mini? Which one of? Small? Larger? Sports? Four-wheel drive? Cabriolet? Coupe? Five-door? Diesel? In fact, the Mini's mindset is reflected in a wider crowd of customers and this is where the need for extensive customization for customers comes in. So, here is a car that is not the original Mini. To begin with, it was equipped with five doors. Comfortable? Well, yes, with the exception of a small door, digging inside is as difficult as digging through the front door on a three-door model.

On the other hand, this Mini has a slightly longer wheelbase, which contributes to a more comfortable ride, and the trunk is just under 70 liters larger. Sure, it's easier to attach children to the seats through the door, but if you tell them that the front passenger seat also has ISOFIX beds, we doubt you'll ever put them on the back bench. Moreover, the central part of the dashboard now looks even more like a Las Vegas slot machine. Where there was once a speedometer, there is now a multimedia system with navigation, surrounded by a set of colored lights that blink in response to every command.

The suffix in the Mini's name already points to the other extreme, which is the result of adapting to an ever-expanding crowd of buyers. Of course, sports cars with diesel engines are no longer a taboo topic, but every time we defend the advantages of such cars with a lump in our throat. And what are they? Without a doubt, this is the huge amount of torque that the two-liter four-cylinder biturbo is capable of. A staggering 360 Nm torque in such a small car is available at almost any time and in any gear. We absolutely cannot ignore the fact that this type of miniature car will visit gas stations much less often. Yet in one thing it will never replace a gasoline engine: in sound.

If we were happy to look for engine speeds in a petrol Mini that create the most beautiful resonance, then in a diesel Mini these delights are completely absent. We think the Mini understood this well too, which is why they installed an excellent Harman / Kardon sound system that delivers special enjoyment on a slightly different level. At this point, all Mini fans still somehow stick together. We are wondering if the day will come when they also start dividing into mainstream and those that have reached the brand, now that the Mini has also fulfilled their requirements.

evaluation

  • If the brand's ideology was based on this car, it would be hard to worry about anything. The diesel is excellent, and the five-door body is also a practical solution. Still, is this still a real Mini Cooper S?
