Short test: Mini Cooper S (5 doors)

This time we will start exclusively from the last part. Compared to the three-door version, the boot is 67 liters larger, since the volume of bags, boxes, travel bags and clothes ends at 278 liters. In addition, the sliding partition can be split in two, and the rear bench, which is one-third divisible, provides a flat bottom for transporting larger items. Sales volumes aren't exactly record-breaking, but a two-week purchase for a family of four will easily swallow the trunk. Checked.

Let's go a little further and stop in the rear seats. The tailgate is smaller, but thanks to a longer wheelbase of 7,2 centimeters compared to its three-door sibling, I also put my 180 centimeters in the back seat. I would not recommend long distances, as the knees need to be placed straight in the comfortable hole in the middle of the rear of the front seat backrest and sit straight, but at the expense of 1,5 cm more headroom for the rear passengers and 6,1 cm more width at the level elbow (again compared to the three-door version) the space does not cause claustrophobia.

ISOFIX anchorages can be used as a model. Then we finally move on to the driver, who should be sporty but family-friendly. The design of the five-door Mini isn't as consistent as the three-door, so it's not as pretty, but the rear side doors and extra inches are well hidden by the designers. The Cooper S is the most powerful engine ever: the turbocharged 6,3-liter four-cylinder engine has received so much praise that there is no need to waste words on its quality. In the Green program and the soft right leg, it can also consume an average of XNUMX liters, and with the Sport program on and a dynamic driver, don't be surprised by figures that exceed the magical limit of ten liters.

But performance, be it power or torque, the crackle of the exhaust system when the accelerator pedal is lowered, the first-class drivetrain, and the sporty chassis always provide a shining face for those who know what a good sports car is and why. they bought it. Granted, the family won't be thrilled with the increased suspension and damping, but it's not least the Cooper S, not the One (D) or Cooper (D). However, we must once again point out all the innovations that are in the new Mini.

The speedometer is now in front of the driver, which is more ergonomic and transparent, and the infotainment data reigns supreme on the large round screen, which remains tradition in favor of tradition. You can change the color of the decorations (around the sensors and internal hooks) as you like, but most of them were too lively, kitschy for me. Maybe I'm too old ... The five-door Mini is supposed to take over the top-selling model, which is a big burden on the newcomer's shoulders. But the fact is that despite the increase, it remains a true Mini. So why not vote for the more useful home?

evaluation

  • If you think the seven-inch increase makes the five-door Mini less fun to drive, you're wrong. But that's why it is so much more useful.
