Short test: Škoda Fabia Combi 1.2 TSI (81 kW) Style

We do not condemn the old Fabia Combi, as a huge number of families serve them faithfully. In fact, because of the greater height, this is the ideal car for older people who find it difficult to get in or out of it. But at Škoda, they wanted more – you could say otherwise, especially when it comes to rejuvenating their showroom visitors. As a result, the new Fabia Combi is one centimeter longer, four centimeters wider and 3,1 centimeters lower than its predecessor. And if we look at the even more drastic design moves made by the group around Škoda's Slovakian design chief Josef Kaban, then it should be clear to us where the new dynamic came from.

Big ass did not spoil the freshness, which, on the other hand, undoubtedly hints at family moves. The novelty has 25 liters more luggage space compared to its predecessor and, believe me, with 530 liters it's really impressive. At the same time, you should not lose sight of a few additional features that will come in handy in everyday life. Two large drawers next to the rear fenders are designed for small items, and a useful novelty is also a flexible (removable, of course!) strap, in which you can put, for example, a bag. There are also two hooks for shopping, and a 12V outlet will keep your drink cold with a handy cooler bag in the trunk.

Looking under the bottom of the trunk, you can see the replacement of the classic tire, which is definitely a better solution than a conditionally useful repair kit. The only major complaint about the Škoda Fabia is the fuzzy passenger side, as if you were blindfolded behind the wheel, you certainly wouldn't know if you were in a Volkswagen, Seat or Škoda. Of course, there are many supporters of the aforementioned German brand who will disagree with this conclusion, but nevertheless, even in the interior (as well as in the exterior), the models of the Volkswagen Group brands can also be more diverse in design. . But they say that money is the ruler of the world, and common components certainly mean more profit than the individualization of individual models.

But optimists, and fortunately quite a few Škoda customers, see it in a completely different light, as the built-in technologies are proven and thoroughly tested. For example, the 1,2-liter TSI engine with 81 kilowatts or more of the domestically produced 110 “horses” is an old friend, although it boasts direct fuel injection and EU6 compliance, start-stop and brake energy savings, and a six-speed manual. gears (for a DSG dual-clutch transmission, you need to subtract the extra George) and an infotainment system whose main advantage is a large intuitive and touch screen. They work like a Swiss watch, and when you switch from car to car, as is customary in the Auto store, you immediately wonder why not everyone already has them.

There have been some savings on soundproofing as the noise from the chassis is louder than some of the competition, and especially in the Keyless Go system. This allows you to start and stop the engine with a single button, which is great if the system is equipped with a smart key to get in and out of the car. Then you can always have the key in your pocket or purse and do everything with the buttons or sensors on the hooks. In Škoda, the task was only half done, so unlocking and locking are still classics, and starting works with a button. If I already have to get into the car with the key in hand, then the classic engine start is a purely routine task, because the button is more confusing than helpful ...

We praised the LED technology daytime running lights that automatically switch to full lighting in tunnels and at dusk, the cornering assist function, the hands-free system, the cruise control, but of course we need those four airbags and two safety ones. curtains were never needed. Accessories include black 16-inch alloy wheels, Bolero car radio and Sun Set insulating glass. Kudos to Škoda for a different path that is closer to the sportiness and dynamism that it has so successfully promoted with the Škoda Fabia S2000 or the upcoming R5 racing car. If we can be a little fairy tale, the Fabia Combi has gone from being an ugly duckling to a real swan. If only the interior was a little more original ...

evaluation

  • With a 530 liter trunk that includes a men's bike (tested!). When the back bench is folded, you cannot miss it. If the design department, led by the head of Škoda's design department, Slovak Josef Kaban, had a little more freedom inside, the Škoda Fabio Combi would immediately advise younger families thanks to proven technology.

We praise and reproach

trunk size and ease of use

ISOFIX mounts

six-speed manual transmission

intuitive touchscreen center display

regular replacement tire

no smart key to enter / exit the car

poor soundproofing of the chassis

inside also looks like Volkswagen / Seat
