Short test: Hyundai i30 Fastback 1.4 T-GDI Impression

No, it's not! This i30 Fastback replaced the model in our country, which was also the i30, but they chose to call it Elantra - because of the long history of successful sales of previous generations. But limousines, at least for European buyers, are no longer desirable, and some car manufacturers already need many models and options due to their appearance in almost all world markets. Thus, the lucky five-door i30 is now referred to as the third body version in Hyundai's Slovenian offering. It is best suited for those who are looking for something else, which, in an era of increasingly common SUVs, is certainly not the taste of the majority. This, of course, concerns the shape of the body. The fastback is also tied to a common technical base with the other two i30s (a regular five-door and a station wagon), and another Hyundai model (like the Tucson or Kona, for example) can be found, helping to create a solid driving experience through shared technologies. – engines, transmissions, chassis parts, and electronic safety or driving aids. The same goes for the interior hardware, gauges, not so many control buttons and central display.

The tried and tested i30 Fastback, with the richest Impression equipment package, had quite a few other important accessories so that we could consider it a driver-friendly vehicle for everyday use. It was equipped with a fairly new 1,4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission (dual clutch) (additional cost of 1.500 euros) for easier and more precise shifting. Radar cruise control (in the Smartsense II package for €890) and a traffic sign recognition camera (€100) provided more safety, so the i30 Fastback also provides the basics of autonomous driving – automatically adjusting the safety distance when driving in a column and even braking to a complete stop .

A slightly less compelling part of the test car was the chassis fitted with 225/40 ZR 18 tires (€ 230 surcharge), its aesthetics improved slightly, and it was not particularly enjoyable to drive on potholed Slovenian roads.

A pleasant surprise, of course, was the new engine - the i30 is peppy, powerful and quite economical.
