Short test: Citroën Grand C4 Picasso BlueHDi 150 BVA6 Exclusive

Something similar, of course, applies to cars. In Slovenia (well, of course, in other countries of Europe and the world), golf is the law. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, mainly because the car is really good. But taking it to the other extreme, there are brands that once didn't have successful models, but now they can have great ones, and people still remember that infamous reputation. It would be difficult to categorize Citroën as particularly deviant, but there is a general consensus that the Citroën car is simply "French". Which, of course, is not bad for drivers who love the comfort and softness of driving, but unacceptable for those who are used to the "Germans" and sports driving. Is this still the case?

Much has changed in the automotive industry in recent years. New classes appear, car brands produce more and more models. Citroën has no problem with minivans. By general Slovenian opinion, the best family choice is Berlingo, sometimes it was Xsara Picasso, that is, Citroën's pioneer in family minivans. Citroën now offers the C4 Picasso, a cutting-edge variant of the Xsare Picasso.

It's a Citroën and it's French, but the test version was a pleasant surprise, although we've already tested quite a few versions of the new Citroën C4 Picasso. The main reason should immediately be pointed out - the test car was equipped with almost everything that one could wish for in this class. Both standard and optional equipment was huge, of course, this is also reflected in the price of the car, which with basic equipment will cost 32.670 euros, and the test version is more expensive by a good five thousand euros. With so much equipment (for which there is not enough space to list it at all), a much worse car would have been very decent, and the 4 Picasso was generally convincing. Of course, the first and very big plus is the word Grand in the title.

The nearly 17-centimeter increase does not have to be filled with a third row of seats, the buyer can opt for just five seats and a larger trunk. Commendable. The result is more space inside and, of course, in the second row, where there are three separate seats. There has been no ghost or rumor about French softness for a long time, the seats are hard enough to do their job perfectly. The driver's seat offers a lot, maybe even too much for the technically uneducated driver. The classic buttons and switches are almost gone, and the era of virtual switches or touch switches lies ahead, whether on or near large screens. Of course, you need to get used to such an interior when you conquer it, but there are no problems with it. Will it be all?

No need to waste words on the engine. It is neither the greatest nor the least, it is the same with power. The 150 "horsepower" does its job more than satisfactory, it also has an impressive 370Nm of torque, which allows you to be very fast with a car weighing almost a tonne and a half, of course, if you want. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes just over 10 seconds, and the top speed reaches 207 km / h. So made for travel? Exactly.

The test Grand C4 Picasso impressed with this way of driving, as it handled and reliably excelled at high speeds. The gearbox also helps him with this. The Citroëns powertrain was once considered the weak link of Citroën or the entire PSA group. Especially if it was automatic, even worse if it was robotic. For the ignorant driver, the car rattled, the gear shifting was not timed to the driver's desire, in short, it was not like that. On the test car, there were no such problems with the automatic transmission. In fact, very surprisingly, the gear changes were smooth and stress-free, perhaps I could have shifted the transmission to a higher gear earlier, but the overall experience was more than good.

So another story of an uncomfortable gearbox and its shifting ended. Of course, some adjustment is needed and, above all, caution. The gear lever is located at the top right behind the steering wheel, which is comfortable for the hands, but the gear lever is very thin and is too close to the wiper arm. When parking quickly, you may accidentally press the wrong lever and therefore park with the wipers on. Speaking of parking, we must not forget to praise Citroën's parking system, which gets the job done quickly and accurately and can only be a role model and a good teacher for drivers unfamiliar with parking.

evaluation

  • It's hard to write that the test Citroën Grand C4 Picasso turned me on, especially since I'm not a fan of SUVs, but it's definitely not the Citroën they used to be. What's more, if you plan to ride it repeatedly on longer routes, I recommend it. Just keep in mind cruise control, classic is more than enough - radars can sometimes be quirky and refuse to work for no real reason.
