Short test: BMW 330d xDrive Touring M Sport // Right measure?

Three-liter six-cylinder. Also, diesel... How unusual and delightful this figure is today, when everything revolves around mind-blowing liter mills, hybridization and attention paid to every gram of CO2. Especially if such a hard-torque machine is squeezed into the engine bay of a (still) compact model like the Series Three. Already, the Bimwe people should be congratulated on this undoubtedly provocative decision in an increasingly sterile world of the automotive industry.

That is why he does not want to hide his diesel origin and does not want to hide it - the sound of the six-cylinder engine is deep, baritone, diesel. Still polished and complete in its own way. Already at idle, it gives an idea of how much energy and power is hidden in it. An automatic transmission is standard, and in the M Sport version (the package requires a hefty € 6.800) it even has a sports transmission designation. This is also correct. The pull of the short handle moves easily, while the engine is not even very excited, and for easy movement in urban settlements, the main shaft will not rotate at more than 2000 rpm, which is rare.

Elegant and calm, therefore completely manageable even during rush hour and urban chaos. While the sports version of the adaptive chassis combined with 19-inch wheels (and tires) is not the most comfortable on short lateral bumps, as well as in the comfort program. No, it's not a dry and uncomfortable shake that knocks out dental fillings, as the chassis is still flexible enough to cushion abrupt transitions.

But as soon as the traffic relaxes a little and the speeds increase, in the first corners it quickly becomes clear that the chassis is just waking up.... When I load the engine heavily, it seems to swallow and soften whatever the roads throw at it under the wheels, and the faster the trio moves, the more uniform and predictable what happens under the wheels, the more flexible the chassis works.

And, of course, the sports steering gear works great too, which is more decisive in this package and, of course, more straightforward. Even the rest of the support is well calibrated, works smoothly, and the necessary amount of information constantly penetrates the driver's palm. For some manufacturers, the difference in the sports steering system can feel like an unnaturally quick deflection, a transition between a slower and a faster (or more direct) gear on the bar. However, in this model, the immediacy may not be as pronounced, so the transition is more natural and, above all, progressive, so as not to interfere with the intuitiveness of driving.

This trio very cleverly hides its weight (about 1,8 tons). and it is only when hesitantly entering the corner that the weight is felt to be transferred to the outer rim and load the tires. With a focused approach, however, the drive tends to preserve the DNA of the rear-wheel drive, so the clutch transfers as much power to the front pair as is absolutely necessary to play with the bearish 580 Newton-meter torque that threatens to break. tires. still safe. And just right, fun. With a little practice and a lot of gas provocation, this van can have fun cornering as the rear always tends to overtake the front wheels.

It may be inappropriate to mention consumption right now, but from a package integrity standpoint, it just fades into the background. A good seven liters in winter conditions and at least 50% of city mileage is a really good result.... However, the test tour showed that this is possible even with a lower fuel consumption of at least a liter.

After a long time, it was BMW who convinced me in almost every situation and opportunity.... Not only in terms of design and space, where a major step forward is immediately noticeable, but the three-liter six-cylinder engine is so convincing that today, in the days of breathtaking three-cylinder engines, it commands respect for its volume and diesel baritone. Which X Drive manages and calms down very well with its power supply logic. It is also a car that cleverly invited me to explore its limits and possibilities for everyday communication.
