Short test: BMW 220d Active Tourer xDrive
For those looking for a BMW brand and spaciousness, the Bavarians now offer the answer, even with all-wheel drive.
Sasha Kapetanovich
In our first test of the first true minivan with a BMW label, we already found it to be quite successful. But the offer is expanding. Not only might those looking for more space might consider the extended body (Grand Tourer) option, the smaller one also provides a fairly powerful all-wheel drive solution. Compared to the motorization of the Active Tourer, which we tested in the first place, it is much more powerful and, together with the automatic transmission, gives the driver a lot of pleasure. The engine is really suitable for a not-too-heavy vehicle, but in extreme cases it can be filled with luggage, and then it will have to transport more than two tons.
At the same time, the driver can enjoy the responsiveness and, depending on the driving style, the adaptive operation of the automatic transmission. Slightly less convincing drive. On bad roads (wrinkled surfaces) the transition between two- or four-wheel drive can be detected quite well. But this only applies to extreme driving conditions, not normal driving. Then the Active Tourer is surprisingly comfortable, even though ours was equipped with the M Sport package or larger rims and smaller tire cross-sections. The list of accessories for this test car was incredibly rich, and this is finally shown in the price, as it was a premium one. However, it should be noted that the buyer gets a lot for this money, and contrary to the practice of the first Active Tourer tested, even ISOFIX equipment on both outer rear seats is already included as standard. In short, driving an Active Tourer is a kind of sign of high altitude living.
