Grilles test: Toyota Yaris GRMN

If we break down this acronym, we get the phrase Gazoo Racing Master of Nürburgring. And if the first two words show that this Yaris belongs to the sports department of Toyota Gazoo Racing, then the second part looks much more mysterious. Namely, Toyota posthumously announced its chief test driver and engineer, Hiromu Naruse, who died in an accident near the said Lexus LFA while testing the Lexus LFA. Considered a legend in his field, his spirit was associated with a new generation of Toyota athletes, emerging from the patronage of Hiromu's test team.

From a story to a specific case. But before that, a little note: everything you read about the Yaris GRMN can only be used to expand your treasure trove of automotive knowledge, not as support when buying this car. Because it's a limited edition of 400 cars that Toyota says sold out in just 72 hours.

And what convinced buyers other than the tempting fact that it was a limited edition? Of course, the Yaris GRMN is different from all other "hot hatchbacks". It differs in that the nose hides a 1,8-liter gasoline engine, which is "breathed" by the compressor. The engine, developed by Toyota with the help of Lotus, develops 212 "horsepower", which it sends to the front pair of wheels through a six-speed gearbox and a mechanical Thorsna differential. The exhaust system, located in the middle, offers a pleasant soundstage when the Yaris revs, and when driving slowly, it is not annoying and too loud. The numbers say that such a Yaris accelerates to a hundred in 6,4 seconds, and the arrow on the speedometer stops at 230 kilometers per hour. Endless laps at the Nürburgring helped to refine the chassis with Sachs racing shock absorbers to perfection. At the same time, it is clear that in such a Yaris everything is subordinated to the sporting spirit, and this is exactly the impression that the interior makes.

The spartan sports seats serve their purpose, the steering wheel is similar to that of a Toyota GT86, and the pedals and shifter are made from aluminum. In Yaris GRMN, you will look in vain for switches for suspension adjustment, various driving programs or differential settings. Yaris GRMN is a primal player, he is always ready to attack the corners. There it finds itself in a balanced position, and because of the shorter wheelbase, it is more suited to tighter corners, where the mechanical differential lock also comes to the fore. That is why it performed well in Raceland, where, despite the already worn tires, we measured its time of 57,64 seconds, which puts it on our scale even ahead of larger “caliber” cars (BMW M5 Touring, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, Mini John Cooper Works).

Due to the very limited number of vehicles produced, Toyota may have wanted to make the Yaris a collectible, but they still rely on select customers to take advantage of it.

evaluation

  • Sorry, we can't recommend you to buy it because you just can't buy it. However, we can say that everyone under the auspices of the "garage" GRMN made an effort and created a car that their former colleague Hiromu Narusa would be proud of.

We praise and reproach
