Short test: Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi EDC

Today in the crossover segment there are a huge number of good models, but no one is a competitor to Duster for only one reason: price. The Duster uses a powertrain from models created by Renault and Nissan, but they are all packaged in such a way that the availability of Dacia models is much more affordable for those who don't need quilted leather, dual-zone air conditioning and radar for transportation from the point of view. And to point B. cruise control.

However, this does not mean that Duster does not know how to approach those who are looking for something more serious at a reasonable price. This version was also tested, namely the most powerful version with a robotic gearbox with two clutches. Most importantly, we have not noticed any deviations from the more expensive models with which Duster shares the technological side of the story. The 110 horsepower turbo diesel is reliable, economical and ideal for all the challenges we face for the Duster, while the automatic transmission convinces with quick and decisive gear changes without jumps when maneuvering at lower speeds, which is basically a dual clutch feature. transmissions.

And where to distinguish from more expensive models? While driving, especially with soundproofing of the cabin, as the roar of the engine and gusts of wind strongly penetrate the cabin. The cabin, although upgraded to 2017 with a central seven-inch touchscreen, feels cheap, largely due to the monotony of the design and materials used. But all this can be taken into account, but only the height-adjustable steering wheel is a much more serious drawback. There's enough space in the back seat for three passengers, and there's no problem with the trunk next to the 408-litre trunk.

The softly tuned suspension will convince those looking for comfort on poor surfaces, a higher seating position will come in handy for visibility, and large side mirrors and a rearview camera will assist when parking. On a normal lap, the Duster consumed an average of 5,9 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers, otherwise it will be difficult for you to get more liters than that.

Finally, back to Duster's biggest asset, price. Yes, you can get it for a ridiculous 13 thousand, but this spartan version is intended for more transport purposes. Even more interesting, you can get a diesel version with an automatic transmission and a much higher level of equipment for four thousand more. This is already a machine that has no competition among rationally oriented buyers.

evaluation

  • With each new model, Dacia is reducing the number of compromises that buyers of these cheaper cars have to face. The Duster, with its turbodiesel and automatic transmission, is already protruding a little from the frames that should represent inexpensive cars.
