Short test: Hyundai ix35 1.7 CRDi 2WD Comfort

The connection between the look of an SUV and front-wheel drive may seem confusing to some, but there are still quite a few customers who love it. An interesting combination is created with the base diesel engine of the new 1,7-liter Hyundai.

If we also opt for Hyundai's second equipment level, we get a decently equipped virtual SUV. But with the ix35, looks are almost everything, as it appeals to old and young, men and women.

With Hyundai, the new smaller turbodiesel was only meant to be connected to the front-wheel drive, so there are no particular problems with the choice. If you want a more modest engine, you will only need to opt for one pair of wheels. I used the adjective “more modest” mainly because this engine does provide more modest maintenance costs - it turns out to be quite powerful (mainly due to excellent torque), but also quite economical in terms of fuel consumption. It can also reach an average of about 5,5 liters, but it can also be increased to 8,0 liters per 100 kilometers, especially when driving at maximum speed.

What is most surprising is the long list of equipment already in the basic version (Life). It features a variety of electronic driving aids (including ESP and downhill and downhill systems) as well as a great radio with a full range of outlets (USB, AUX and iPod) and even an electric windshield defroster. There are more useful accessories in the Comfort package, but the most important thing is the longitudinal rails of the roof rack.

The driving experience is satisfactory; when starting off, the electronics really help to brake the drive wheels, which go to idle too quickly on slippery surfaces. The electric power steering is also a little annoying, as it reacts too quickly to light steering movements at high speeds.

Of course, less acceptable things can be found in the Hyundai ix35. The material from which the instrument panel is made gives the impression of cheapness. Despite the electrification of the side window lifters, something seems to be missing: the driver's window only automatically goes down, not up. Even a trip button that helps you figure out the trip computer is not the best solution.
