Test drive Kia XCeed: spirit of the times

Driving an attractive crossover based on the current generation Kia Ceed

The arrival of a model like the XCeed is no doubt great news for any Kia dealer, simply because the recipe for this car guarantees good sales. And its concept is as common, given the continued growth of SUV and crossover models in all segments, as it is successful from a market point of view. Based on the Ceed standard, the Koreans have created a great-looking model with increased ground clearance and adventurous design.

The XCeed comes standard with impressive 18-inch wheels, and its sophisticated styling draws an enviable number of people who pay attention to the model. In fact, the fact in question is a fairly clear explanation of why brand strategists predict that in certain markets, the new variant will account for about half of sales of the entire Ceed model family.

Another Ceed

It's impressive how, in addition to the classic crossover body trappings, Kia's designers have added an extra dose of dynamism to the car's appearance - the XCeed's proportions are noticeably athletic from all angles. The model looks both impressive and sporty-aggressive, which many will like.

Inside, we find the well-known successful ergonomic concept from other versions of the model, which is enriched by the debuted new state-of-the-art infotainment system in XCeed with a 10,25-inch touchscreen at the top of the center console, which boasts 3D images on the navigation system maps.

Despite a lower roofline than the standard hatchback, passenger space is quite satisfactory, including in the second row of seats. The equipment, especially on the upper level, is frankly extravagant, and the stylish design is complemented by cute details in a contrasting color.

Front wheel drive only

Like many other models with a similar drive concept, the XCeed relies exclusively on its front wheels, as the platform on which the car is built currently does not allow for dual-drive versions.

It is gratifying to note that the taller body did not change the direct and precise steering responses, and the roll of the car in corners is minimal. The ride is quite stiff, which is not surprising given the large wheels wrapped in low profile tires.

The test car was powered by the best 1,6-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 204 horsepower and a maximum torque of 265 Nm at 1500 rpm. Combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the transmission is both energetic and quite comfortable.

For sports-accelerating enthusiasts, a powerful engine is a good choice, but in the interests of truth, given the traction of the front wheels, one could be completely satisfied with one of the weaker units, which are certainly more profitable from a financial point of view.
