How to protect your car from rust?

To prevent corrosion, it is necessary to take care of the main body of the car - wash it at least 3-4 times a month, without limiting the process to a quick wash without foam (especially in winter, when chemicals are used on the road). Anti-corrosion agents

After buying a car, especially an old one, it is necessary to carry out anti-corrosion treatment of the body. Factory corrosion protection does not cover many critical areas that subsequently rust. In addition, the body can be covered with a special anti-gravel film that protects the paint and prevents water from entering the metal. Wax can also be applied regularly, but it should not be forgotten that this type of protection is effective only when applied to a completely clean and dry surface.

Electrochemical protection

You can protect the body with "sacrificial protectors" or "sacrificial anodes" using a method used in the marine industry for the same purpose. Special plates are attached to the most vulnerable places of the car using epoxy glue - protectors made of zinc, aluminum or copper, which are built into the car's on-board network using wires. When energized, these protectors oxidize and the less active metal on the body is regenerated.

Electrochemical protection

For simpler cathodic protection, which does not require an external voltage source, special protector plates (ranging in size from 4 to 10 sq. Cm) are used, made of a material with a higher electronegativity than the car body (graphite, magnetite, etc.). One such element is able to protect up to 50 cm of the body area.

Fighting the incipient corrosion

In case of corrosion, aerosol or helium rust converters will help to correct the situation. Their principle of action is that they create a protective film that stops the spread of rust. In the absence of these modern remedies, you can use regular vinegar, baking soda solution, or water mixed with citric acid. In any case, it must be remembered that the transducers penetrate into the metal to a depth of no more than 20 microns. After processing with them, no additional cleaning of the surface is required before painting. But if the rust has penetrated deeper, the problem area will need to be sanded.
