How to use the OnStar RemoteLink app on your smartphone

Cars equipped with OnStar have been helping their drivers for a long time. OnStar is a system built into many General Motors (GM) vehicles that acts as a driver assistant. OnStar can be used for hands-free calls, emergency assistance, or even diagnostics.

Once smartphones became the norm, OnStar developed the RemoteLink app for phones, which allows drivers to perform many activities in their vehicle directly from their smartphone or tablet. With the RemoteLink app, you can do everything from finding your vehicle on a map, to viewing your vehicle's diagnostics, starting the engine, or locking and unlocking the doors.

Like most apps, the RemoteLink app is pretty intuitive and easy to access and use. All you have to do is follow a few steps and you can start using the RemoteLink app on your smartphone right away.

Part 1 of 4: Setting Up an OnStar Account

Step 1: Activate your OnStar subscription. Set up and activate your OnStar account subscription.

Before using the RemoteLink app, you need to set up an OnStar account and start a subscription. To set up an account, press the blue OnStar button located on the rearview mirror. This will put you in touch with an OnStar representative.

Let your OnStar representative know you want to open an account and then follow all instructions.

Step 2: Get Your OnStar Account Number. Write down your OnStar account number.

When setting up an account, ask the representative what account number you have. Be sure to write down this number.

• FunctionsA: If you lose or forget your OnStar account number at any time, you can press the OnStar button and ask your representative for your number.

Part 2 of 4: Setting Up an OnStar Profile

Step 1: Go to the OnStar website.. Visit the main OnStar website.

Step 2. Create an online profile. Create your online profile on the OnStar website.

On the OnStar website, click "My Account" and then "Sign Up". Enter all required information, including your OnStar account number that you received from your representative when you started your subscription.

Choose a username and password for your OnStar online account.

Part 3 of 4: Get the RemoteLink App

Step 1: Download the OnStar App. Download the OnStar RemoteLink app for your smartphone or tablet.

Visit your phone's app store, search for OnStar RemoteLink and download the app.

Step 2: Login. Sign in to the OnStar RemoteLink app.

Use the username and password you created on the OnStar website to log in to the RemoteLink app.

Part 4 of 4: Use the App

Step 1: Get familiar with the app. Get used to the OnStar RemoteLink app.

When you sign in to the OnStar RemoteLink app, your app will automatically link to your vehicle based on your account number.

From the main page of the app, you can access all the functions of RemoteLink.

Click "Vehicle Status" to view all information about your vehicle. This will include mileage, fuel condition, oil level, tire pressure and vehicle diagnostics.

Click on "keychain" to do everything the same as a standard keychain. For example, the key fob section in the RemoteLink app can be used to lock or unlock the car, turn the engine on or off, flash the headlights, or sound the horn.

Click "Navigation" to adjust the map to your destination. When you select a destination, it automatically appears on the navigation screen the next time you turn on the car. Click "Map" to see where your car is.
