Fiat Bravo 1.4 Starjet 16V Dynamic

I can hang your lower jaw while looking at the new Bravo, mainly because of its shape. The Italians showed themselves again. If you make a circle around the body and follow the lines, you will go around it. You don't stop anywhere, you get stuck, everything is fluid and dynamic. Even the interior is so sleek that the vast majority of competitors, if not all, disappear. However, beauty often demanded other taxes from Italians and continues to collect them.

There really isn't a lot of storage space in this Bravo, so storing small items will take some imagination, but the large drawer in front of the passenger has room for almost everything, if not elsewhere. Drinking problems are few and far between. Ergonomics aren't perfect either. Thus, the headlight adjustment button is located far to the right of the (otherwise good) radio, which is useful when damping high speeds. As if adjusting the light was the passenger's handiwork. We could also improve the readability of the daytime running lights as well as the one-way trip computer.

This is very informative, which also means that if you miss one parameter, you have to go through all the others to get back to the desired location. Already in the previous Braves (last generation), we criticized the opening of the fuel tank with a key. It is also impractical to open the tailgate, as they do not have hooks on the outside (an extra design element?) So that the door opened by the button on the key can be lifted up without getting dirty (if the door is closed). dirty of course). It can also be hindered during loading by the boot's high boot edge, which is otherwise exemplary and expandable. It sits well, the steering wheel is also well regulated in this almost basic configuration, the windshields and side mirrors are powered by electricity, the power steering is two-speed. Dynamic also has air conditioning so no equipment accessories are needed.

The engine took care of the yawning in this package. The 1-liter four-cylinder engine "successfully" hides its "horses" and also suffers from a torque of just 4 Nm at 128 rpm. If you can, choose a more powerful engine, as the Bravo with this engine is one of the least dynamic on the road. Is the entry-level device underpowered and only provides basic mobility needs and does not allow for the good chassis, handling and roominess of the Bravo? With the boot fully loaded and the seats occupied, trust me, there is no tilt that the 4.500-liter Starjet (what an inappropriate name!) would happily accept.

With some acceleration, the Bravo 1.4 also moves dynamically around town, but fuel consumption is higher and overtaking, which is a prerequisite for reaching higher revs when the four-cylinder is the “most generous” in power, occurs more frequently. The gearbox is six-speed, good, precise and ready to change from one slot to the next, more importantly because of the need for regular shifting. Six levels provide better energy efficiency and lower consumption, which is only relevant when driving slowly. With this Bravo, you can easily drive on the highway, but there are no miracles to be expected either.

It takes some time and kilometers to build up a suitable driving speed, which can reach 150 kilometers per hour. Just don't expect any liveliness, especially when accelerating in fifth and sixth gears, which are designed primarily to reduce noise and fuel consumption. A more powerful engine is often not a means of crushing, but, first of all, a means for more comfortable overcoming the distance. The need for acceleration, despite good sound insulation, introduces additional noise into the cabin. Overtaking is limited to longer aircraft, and for safer integration on priority roads, it is often necessary to wait for the vehicle to pass. The impression would be slightly improved by the more responsiveness of the engine. It is perhaps no coincidence that the tachometer is more pronounced than the speedometer.

Gears line up quickly as the speedometer reads 90 rpm in sixth gear at 2.300 km / h (speedometer data) and over 150 rpm at 50 km / h (same gear). Fourth gear (50 km / h) is ideal for city driving at XNUMX miles per hour, but only until traffic flows a little faster. Then you need more revolutions. ... However, the good thing about a weaker engine is that it is difficult for you to overdo it and break the speed limits.

Fuel consumption measured during the test was 8 liters. The same fuel consumption could be achieved with a stronger Bravo, which would make driving more comfortable and fun, but of course it is also more expensive. Both at the base price and in terms of content (more expensive insurance, comprehensive insurance ...). This is where the motorized Bravo makes sense. And here.

evaluation

  • So the motorized Bravo on the price list is an attractive (entry-level) offer and on the road only caters to those who want to drive a Bravo at a good price and don't care if they're among the slower ones. If you want the temperament to match the shape of this Fiat, choose the other horses. There are more of them.
