Mercedes M273 engine
The Mercedes-Benz M273 engine is a V8 gasoline engine that was first introduced in 2005 as an evolution engine M113.
The M273 engine has an aluminum cylinder block with cast Silitec sleeves (Al-Si alloy), aluminum crankcase, forged steel crankshaft, forged connecting rods, sequential fuel injection, Bosch ME9 engine management, aluminum cylinder heads, double overhead camshafts, chain drive , four valves per cylinder, variable intake manifold made of aluminum-magnesium alloy, switchable intake flaps. The M273 engine was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz M278 engine in 2010.

M273 engine problems
One of the main and popular problems of the M273 is wear of the drive gear of the timing chain, which leads to a violation of the position of the camshafts in the right head (for engines manufactured before September 2006). How to identify the problem: The check engine lamp, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) 1200 or 1208 are stored in the ME-SFI control unit.
Cars built from September 2006 have a harder metal gear.
Oil leakage through plastic cylinder head plugs... In Mercedes-Benz engines M272 V6 and M273 V8s that were produced prior to June 2008 may experience oil leakage (seepage) through the round plastic expansion plugs on the back of the cylinder heads.
There were two types of stubs of different sizes:
- A 000 998 55 90: two small expansion plugs (approx. 2,5 cm in diameter);
- A 000 998 56 90: one large small expansion plug (for engines without a vacuum pump).
To fix this, you need to remove the existing plugs, clean the hole, and install new plugs. Do not use sealant when installing new plugs.
In June 2008, new bushings were put into production, which are not subject to oil leaks.
Breakage of the damper regulator in the intake manifold (variable intake geometry). Due to forced ventilation of crankcase gases, carbon deposits can accumulate in the intake manifold, which impedes the movement of the control mechanism, which leads to its breakdown.
Symptoms:
- Rough idle;
- Loss of power (especially at low and medium engine speeds);
- Illumination of engine warning lamps;
- Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) such as P2004, P2005, P2006, P2187 and P2189 (decoding OBD2 error codes).
Mercedes-Benz М273 engine tuning
Tuning the M273 engine assumes atmospheric and compressor options (both kits can be found at Kleemann):
- Atmospheric. Installation of camshafts with a phase of 268, finalization of the release, cold intake, modified firmware.
- Compressor. The Kleemann company offers a compressor kit for the M273 without the need to modify the standard piston compressor due to the low boost pressure. With the installation of such a kit, you can reach 500 hp.
