Mercedes M111 engine

The Mercedes M111 engine was produced for more than 10 years - from 1992 to 2006. It has demonstrated high reliability, and even now on the roads you can find cars equipped with engines of this series without serious claims to the power unit

Specifications Mercedes M111

Motors Mercedes M111 - a series of 4-cylinder engines, with DOHC and 16 valves (4 valves per cylinder), in-line arrangement of cylinders in the block, injector (PMS or HFM injection, depending on the modification) and timing chain drive. The line includes both aspirated and compressor power units.Mercedes M111 engine specifications, modifications, problems and reviews

Engines were produced with a volume of 1.8 l (M111 E18), 2.0 l (M111 E20, M111 E20 ML), 2.2 l (M111 E22) and 2.3 l (M111 E23, M111 E23ML), some of them in several modifications. The characteristics of the motors are summarized in the table.

The average service life of the line engines is 300-400 thousand km of run.

Average fuel consumption in city / highway / mixed cycles:

  • M111 E18 - 12.7 / 7.2 / 9.5 L for Mercedes C180 W202;
  • M111 E20 - 13.9 / 6.9 / 9.7 л на Mercedes C230 Kompressor W203;
  • M111 E22 - 11.3 / 6.9 / 9.2 l;
  • M111 E20 - 10.0 / 6.4 / 8.3 L when installed on Mercedes C230 Kompressor W202.

Engine modifications

The production of basic versions of motors was started in 1992. Modifications of the units of the series were of a local nature and were aimed at insignificantly improving performance and meeting specific requirements for various car models.

The differences between the modifications mainly boiled down to replacing the PMS injection with HFM. Compressor (ML) versions were equipped with an Eaton M62 supercharger.

In 2000, a deep modernization (restyling) of the popular series was carried out:

  • BC is reinforced with stiffeners;
  • Installed new connecting rods and pistons;
  • Increased compression achieved;
  • Changes have been made to the configuration of the combustion chambers;
  • The ignition system has been upgraded by installing individual coils;
  • Used new candles and nozzles;
  • The throttle valve has become electronic;
  • Environmental friendliness has been brought to Euro 4, etc.

In compressor versions the Eaton M62 is replaced by the Eaton M45. The restyled units received the EVO index and were produced until 2006 (for example, E23), and were gradually replaced by the M271 series.

Mercedes M111 problems

All engines of the M111 series family are characterized by common "diseases":

  • Oil leakage due to worn cylinder head seals.
  • A drop in power and an increase in consumption due to malfunctions of the mass air flow sensor with a run of about 100 thous.
  • Water pump leak (mileage - from 100 thousand).
  • Wear of piston skirts, cracks in the exhaust at the interval from 100 to 200 thous.
  • Oil pump malfunctions and problems with the timing chain after 250 thous.
  • Mandatory replacement of candles every 20 thousand km.

In addition, the solid "work experience" of motors by now requires careful attention - the use of only branded fluids and timely maintenance.

Tuning M111

Any action to increase the capacity is only justified on units with a compressor (ML).

For this purpose, you can replace the compressor pulley and firmware with a sports one. This will give an increase of up to 210 or 230 hp. respectively on 2- and 2.3-liter engines. Another 5-10 hp. will give a replacement exhaust, which will lead to a more aggressive sound. It is irrational to work with atmospheric units - alterations will result in such a volume of work and cost that buying a new, more powerful engine will be more profitable.
