Mercedes M113 engine
Content
The Mercedes-Benz M113 engine is a V8 petrol that was introduced in 1997 and replaced the M119 engine. The standard M113 engines were built in Stuttgart, while the AMG versions were assembled in Affalterbach. Closely related to gasoline M112 V6 engine, the M113 engine had 106mm cylinder spacing, 90-degree V-configuration, sequential fuel injection, and Silitec die-cast alloy cylinder block (Al-Si alloy).
Description
Liners, forged steel connecting rods, iron coated aluminum pistons, one SOHC overhead camshaft per cylinder bank (chain driven), two spark plugs per cylinder.
The M113 engine had two intake valves and one exhaust valve per cylinder. The use of one exhaust valve per cylinder was chosen to minimize cold heat loss and allow the catalyst to reach its operating temperature more quickly. On the crankshaft in the camber of the block, a counterbalancing balancing shaft is installed, which rotates against the crankshaft at the same speed to neutralize vibration.
Engine M113 E 50 4966 cc cm was available with a cylinder deactivation system, which allowed two cylinders to be deactivated on each row when the engine was at low loads and was running at less than 3500 rpm.
The M113 engine was replaced by the M273, M156 and M152 engines.

M113 problems
Since the M113 is an enlarged copy of the M112 engine, their characteristic problems are the same:
- the crankcase gas recirculation system is clogged, the oil begins to squeeze out through the gaskets and seals (through the crankcase ventilation tubes, the oil also begins to press into the intake manifold);
- untimely replacement of valve stem seals;
- wear of cylinders and oil scraper rings.
The stretching of the chain can occur by 200-250 thousand mileage. It is better not to tighten and change the chain at the first symptoms, otherwise you can also get to replace the stars and everything accompanying.
M113 engine tuning
M113 E43 AMG
The M113.944 V8 engine was used in the W202 C 43 AMG and S202 C 43 AMG Estate. Compared to the standard Mercedes-Benz engine, the following changes have been made to the AMG version:
- Custom forged composite camshafts;
- Intake system with two grooves;
- Larger intake manifold;
- Unique exhaust system with enlarged pipes and modified muffler (system to minimize exhaust back pressure).
Engine M113 E 55 AMG compressor
Installed in the W211 E 55 AMG, it was equipped with an IHI type Lysholm supercharger located between the cylinder banks, which provided a maximum pressure of 0,8 bar and had an integrated air / water cooler. The blower had two Teflon-coated aluminum shafts that rotated at up to 23000 rpm, pushing 1850 kg of air per hour into the combustion chambers. To minimize fuel consumption when operating at partial throttle, the compressor was only operated at certain engine speeds. It was driven by an electromagnetic clutch and a separate poly V-belt.
Other modifications to the M113 E 55 engine:
- Reinforced block with stiffeners and side bolts;
- Balanced crankshaft with modified bearings and stronger material;
- Unique pistons;
- Forged connecting rods;
- Redesigned oil supply system (including sump and pump) and separate oil cooler in the right wheel arch;
- Valve system with 2 springs to increase the maximum engine speed to 6100 rpm (from 5600 rpm);
- Modified fuel system;
- Twin-pipe exhaust system with change-over valve and 70 mm tailpipes to reduce exhaust back pressure;
- Modified ECU firmware.
