Toyota 2 3.0JZ-GTE engine

The 2JZ-GTE 3.0 Turbo engine was installed mainly on the Supra RZ sports coupes, as well as Aristo, but in the first two generations. Produced only in Japan from 1991 to 2002. It was a response to Nissan's improved engine (RB26DETT N1) which was a favorite in a number of championships. In 1997, Japanese developers upgraded the 3.0-liter twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE, as a result of which the model received a variable valve timing system - VVT-i.

  • The Toyota 2JZ-GTE 3.0 engine is equipped with an in-line 6-cylinder block (cast iron) and a 24-valve head (aluminum). However, there is no hydraulic lifter;

  • The engine resource declared by the manufacturer is 300.000 km, but according to reviews, the engine is capable of passing 500.000;
  • The engine includes two turbines with an intercooler, an injection power system, the piston stroke, as well as the cylinder diameter, is 86 mm;

Modifications

In the first couple of improvements, the torque was 435 N * m, but after the developers supplied the VVT-i (1997), the figure increased to 451 N * m. The power of the original engine (2JZ-GE) has also increased after twin turbocharging. It turns out at a speed of 5600 / min. Twin turbo power increased from 227 hp up to 276. Further, the car was modified for the European and American markets (since 1997). The adapted engine began to squeeze out 321 hp.

2JZ-GTE problems

  1. Ignition system (poor resistance to humidity);
  2. The resource of the valve of the VVT-i system is on average about 100 thousand km;
  3. Relatively rapid destruction of turbine fiber;
  4. Timing belt tensioner bracket.

Despite all the drawbacks, the engine is considered very reliable with inexpensive spare parts for maintenance.

Tuning 2JZ-GTE

This model has great potential for tuning.

Stage 1

For a minimum increase in power, you will need to increase the boost pressure. You will need to do:

  • more efficient fuel pump (up to 280 l / h);
  • 550 cc injectors;
  • enlarged radiator;
  • frontal intercooler;
  • oil radiator;
  • cold inlet;
  • bustcontroller;
  • ECU firmware for new parameters (or purchase of a ready-made program).

Stage 1 delivers power up to approx. 450 hp.

Stage 2

Tuning 2JZ-GTE turbo kit

For the second level of power increase, it will already be necessary to replace the turbine with a more powerful one. You can stay on the original twin-turbo system, or you can install a single, but larger turbine. In addition to the turbine itself, you will need:

replacement of the fuel pump with a capacity of up to 400 l / h;

  • 1000 cc injectors;
  • new firmware for the ECU;
  • completion of the valve system;
  • replacement of camshafts with phase 264.

Stage 2 achieves 750 horsepower.

Stage 3

At the third level, it is no longer possible to do without the refinement of the ShPG for forged parts and the revision of the cylinder head. And also an even more efficient turbine is installed, the fuel system is being finalized, camshafts with an increased phase to 280. And, of course, the firmware.
