Toyota 1 2.5JZ-GTE engine
Content
The Toyota 1JZ-GTE engine is one of the most popular and best-selling engines of the Japanese concern Toyota, which is largely due to its high propensity for tuning. Inline 6-cylinder engine with a distributed injection system of 280 hp. Volume 2,5 liters. Timing drive - belt.
The 1JZ-GTE engine began production in 1996, is equipped with a VVT-i system, and is characterized by an increased compression ratio (9,1: 1).

Modifications
There were several generations of 1JZ-GTE engines. The original version had imperfect ceramic turbine discs that were prone to delamination at high speeds and high operating temperatures. Another flaw of the first generation is a one-way valve malfunction, which leads to the penetration of crankcase gases into the intake manifold and, as a result, a decrease in engine power.
The shortcomings were officially recognized by Toyota, and the engine was recalled for revision. The PCV valve was replaced.
The updated engine was equipped with the then innovative VVT-i system with updated valve gaskets to reduce camshaft friction, infinitely variable valve timing, and the ability to effectively cool the cylinders. These improvements have improved the physical compression ratio of the engine and reduced fuel consumption.
1JZ-GTE engine problems
Although the Toyota 1JZ-GTE engine is renowned for its reliability, it has a number of minor drawbacks:
- Overheating of the 6th cylinder. This component of the engine is not sufficiently cooled due to design features, which is why the device has to be modified.
- Ancillary belt tensioner. All attachments are fixed on one belt, and this element wears out rapidly during sharp driving with acceleration and deceleration.
- Damage to the turbine impeller. Some versions are equipped with a turbine with a ceramic impeller, which increases the risk of its destruction and engine breakdown at any mileage.
- A small resource of the VVT-i phase regulator (about 100 thousand km).
Where is the engine number
The engine number is located between the power steering and the engine mount.
Tuning 1JZ-GTE
Budget option - bustap
Important! Consider the fact that for a further increase in power, all parts must be in very good condition, ignition coils without cracks, high-quality plugs, ideally if it is HKS or TRD, compression above 11 in all cylinders with a spread of no more than 0,5 bar ...
Let's try to summarize what is required for an adequate boost:
- Fuel pump Walbro 255 lph;
- Direct-flow exhaust on a pipe with a cross section of up to 80mm;
- Good air filter (Apexi PowerIntake).
These manipulations will allow you to get up to 320 hp.
What needs to be added up to 380 hp
Everything that is described above in the budget version, as well as:
- boost controller for setting the pressure to 0.9 bar - the maximum bar in fuel cards and ignition, prescribed in the ECU (0.9 will not be our target value, read about this in the third paragraph about finalizing the computer);
- frontal intercooler;
- in order for a standard computer to allow inflating 1.2 (this is exactly how much is required for 380 hp), for this there are several solution options: 1. blende inserted into the computer and correcting fuel cards and ignition. 2. an external device, plugged in separately, that performs the same function.
This technique is called PiggyBack.
For those who want up to 500 hp.
- Suitable turbo kits: Garrett GT35R (GT3582R), Turbonetics T66B, HKS GT-SS (expensive option, the first two are cheaper).
- Fuel System: Consider 620cc injectors. Stock fuel hoses can ideally be replaced with reinforced 6AN (although stock ones will withstand, however, there are nuances in the load of the fuel pump, increase in fuel temperature, etc.).
- Cooling: antifreeze radiator (at least 30% more efficient than stock), oil cooler.
What cars was 1JZ-GTE installed on?
- Toyota Supra MK III;
- Toyota Mark II Flash;
- Toyota in Verossa;
- Toyota Chaser/Cresta/Mark II Tourer V;
- Toyota Crown (JZS170);
- Toyota in Verossa
According to car owners, with a skillful approach and high-quality tuning, the mileage of the Toyota 1JZ-GTE engine can reach 500-600 thousand km, which once again confirms its reliability.
