BMW launches top-end turbocharged engine for 7 Series, 5 Series, X5 and X6

Engineers estimate the power at 400 hp. for 3,0-liter six-cylinder unit

BMW launches a six-cylinder turbodiesel with four turbochargers. The new top-end diesel engine is the first to power the BMW 750d xDrive. It will later appear in Series 5, X5, X6 and X7.

The six-cylinder supercar is based on the familiar Tri-Turbo. The heart of the new engine is a new configuration of constant two-stage compression, which consists of two low pressure and two high pressure turbochargers that run on exhaust gases. BMW engineers determine the output at 400 hp. for a 3,0-liter six-cylinder unit and a maximum torque of 760 Nm. As an indicator of fuel economy, the new BMW 7 Series Quadturbo protects the consumption of 5,7 liters.

BMW Quadturbo XNUMXWD only

The Quadturbo, which BMW itself calls a "V8 fighter", can boost torque, but the limiting factor here is the powertrain, which is an eight-speed automatic transmission, according to the developers. New diesel with 381 hp. and the Triturbo with 740 Nm is usually all-wheel drive. With the new diesel engine, BMW is aiming directly at the new Power-Diesel. Audi SQ7 with a four-liter V8 engine producing 435 hp. and 900 Nm.

In addition to achieving these maximum values, great importance is attached to the ability of the engine speed to have the widest range of useful speeds. Thus, on the one hand, the engine speed range from 1600 to 4100 rpm provides at least 90% of the maximum torque, on the other hand, from 3000 to 5000 rpm are generated in the engine speed range. not less than 80% of engine power.

The BMW 750d xDrive accelerates from 100 to 4,6 km in just 4,7 seconds, for the long version in 250 seconds. Top speed is limited to 7 km / h. The new Series 57 diesel engine will go on sale in July. Pricing has not yet been announced. The new Quadturbo, based on the B5 diesel, is likely to find its way into the Series 5, X6, X7 and XXNUMX.
