BMW X5 xDrive30d // Writing Talents

X5, for example, was already such an instance. If the customer thought of it with a sportier M-chassis (or, God forbid, even like the X5M), with which the old X5, admittedly, rode very well for a nearly five-meter SUV, he also “poked”. It is noticeable that the weaker cushioning of short, sharp impacts, as well as other things, was not an example of comfort. A compromise that didn't really pay off.

Well, the new X5 is the first thing you notice behind the wheel, it's different here. The M markings on the front fenders of the test xDrive30d are, of course, a sign that this sporty M also has a chassis and 20-inch wheels, but when the adjustable chassis is in Comfort mode it is barely noticeable. ... In sport mode, it hardens moderately, but we can still say that such an X5 is still one of the most comfortable large SUVs.

However, the driving dynamics are excellent. Already in Comfort mode, the X5 is quite accurate and responsive (which is very important for such a large and heavy car from a safety point of view), responds well to commands from the steering wheel and can assist in reversing when cornering. In the sport driving mode, the reactions are even sharper, the rolls and, most importantly, the body sway is noticeably less, and in total, almost 2,2 tons of total weight is hidden. To summarize: If SUVs resist you because they drive noticeably worse than classic (sport) sedans, give the X5 a try.

As a car for the driver, it turns out such an X5, at least in terms of the chassis. What about the power plant? The designation 30d, of course, means a three-liter six-cylinder diesel with 195 kilowatts or 265 "horsepower". Enough considering the total weight? Yes, even if the driver is more demanding. The combination of engine and automatic transmission works perfectly and it is rarely necessary to switch to Sport mode. OK, if the car is fully loaded and the tracks are steep, you will not overtake the X5 like the M5, but the M5 will not be able to drive at less than eight liters. Yes, the X5 is famous. Not always (which is especially true for highways), but when driving calmly in mixed conditions, he knows. 6,6 liters on our standard lap is a result that puts it on par with its (on paper slightly more powerful) rivals. At the same time, the engine is quite quiet (but in sport mode it still gives something for diesels quite pleasant tones), responsive and generally friendly to both calm and sporty drivers. Such an X5 may not deserve as much propulsion as it does chassis, but even here the rating is undeniably and easily positive.

Of course, good chassis and drive technology don't help much if the feel inside isn't up to par (for this class of car and especially the price). Well, these mistakes on BMW (unlike the previous generation) were not repeated. It doesn't feel as sporty anymore, the materials are friendlier, it sits better (with more room for length), and there's more room in the rear seats (especially for the knees). To say that such an X5 is a great family car would be an understatement, as kids can be quite grown up, but there won't be space issues in either direction. It's the same with the trunk: large, comfortable, surrounded by materials that not only fit the look and feel, but are also resistant enough to uncomfortable skis or muddy shoes.

And something else characterizes the interior: digitization. Luckily, however, the antiquated analog booth said goodbye. The sensors are now digital, recognizable by the BMW brand. (which is good for those who want it out of habit, and nothing bad for everyone else), flexible enough and, above all, pleasantly transparent. The presentation of information is well structured, as the driver (when he catches the settings that suit him) is not overloaded with information. It finds just about anything it can't (or won't) find on the digital gauges (or on the projection screen, which is also highly adjustable and perfectly transparent) on the infotainment system's large center screen. The latter is currently one of the (best), with well-functioning gesture recognition (but their set is still quite small), well-structured selectors, and great graphics on it. BMW, however, keeps up with the times, which is why this X5 is a great choice.

Of course, digitalization also includes modern safety and comfort systems. Of course, you won't find them all in the base equipment, which is classic on most premium models, but if you pay extra for all the packages that the test X5 had (First Class, Innovation Package and Business Package), you will also have almost a complete set of such systems. Therefore, this X5 drives half alone (in the city), boasts excellent active headlights, helps with parking and generally corrects driver errors. Speaking of light: laser headlights (you can hear a very "star war", but in fact it is a technology in which an LED replaces a small laser as a light source) are excellent: both in range and in accuracy and speed of light. beam control.

While almost all car brands showcase the most technological innovations in the electrification and autonomy of their fleets, BMW still managed to create a great classic SUV that took them a big step up from their predecessor - and climbed to the very top of the rankings. Class. Too bad it's not electrified yet.

The engine is good, but not great - both in terms of performance and sound.

  • Driving performance (88
