BMW says goodbye to a unique engine

Within a month, BMW will cease production of one of its most impressive engines, the B57D30S0 (or B57S for short). The 3,0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine was installed on the M50d version but does not meet the new environmental standards and will be removed from the brand's range.

The first signs of this decision appeared a year ago when the German manufacturer dropped the X7 M50d and X5/X6 M50d versions in some markets. The engine itself was introduced in 2016 for the 750 sedan, and immediately after that it appeared on the 5 Series in the M550d version. Thanks to four turbochargers, the unit develops 400 hp. and 760 Nm, making it the most powerful 6-cylinder diesel in the world. At the same time, it has a relatively low fuel consumption of 7 l/100 km.

BMW is now announcing that production of the engine will end in September. The device has a very complex design and cannot meet the new Euro 6d (Euro 6) standard, which will become mandatory for Europe in January 2021. And its modernization will require huge funds, which is not economically justified.
The 4-turbo engine will be replaced by a new 6-cylinder biturbo engine running on a mild hybrid system with a 48-volt starter-generator. The power of the new BMW unit is 335 hp. and 700 Nm. It will be installed on X5, X6 and X7 crossovers in 40d versions, as well as X3 / X4 in M40d versions.

In order to properly retire the device, BMW will offer farewell series in some markets - Final Edition, modifications of the X5 M50d and X7 M50d. They will get rich equipment that includes laser headlights, multimedia system gesture control and a large number of autonomous driver assistants.
