BMW i3 94 Ah REx – which range? The Environmental Protection Agency says it takes 290 kilometers to charge + refuel, but… [VIDEO]

What is the range of the BMW i3 REx (94 Ah) without recharging? How long will the car run from the battery, and how much thanks to the additional internal combustion energy generator? We searched and this is what we found - also about the differences between the American and European versions of the car.

According to EPA the range of the BMW i3 REx (2017) is almost 290 kilometers in diesel-electric mode, of which 156 kilometers only on the battery. It is worth remembering, however, that in the United States, the fuel tank capacity has been reduced by about 1,89 liters (from 9,1 to 7,2 liters / 1,9 gallons), which also reduces the vehicle's overall range by 25-30 kilometers. The restriction is purely electronic, but in the US the car will make sure that we don't use more than 7,2 liters of fuel.

So what is it real power reserve BMW i3 REx 94 Ah in Europe with the ability to use the full capacity of the tank? On YouTube, you can find a test by internet user Roadracer1977 with reasonable driving, optimal temperature and good weather conditions. And with the Power Generator (Range Extender) set to Battery Backup:

The effect? Measured The range of the BMW i3 REx on electricity and gasoline is 343 kilometers., and after stopping the battery showed the ability to drive about 10 kilometers.

Internal combustion engine / Range Extender - when to maintain, when to discharge?

The test requires two explanations. The range extender on the BMW i3 can operate 1) in battery backup mode (see image above) or 2) automatically turn on when the battery level drops to 6 percent.

> Regenerative braking/"electronic pedal" in BMW i3 and other electrics - will Leaf (2018) also include brake lights?

Option № 1 it's better when we want to drive only the electric motor, with its power and acceleration. The car uses petrol first and then discharges the battery.

Option № 2 in turn, this maximizes the range. When the battery is discharged, the vehicle will start the combustion energy generator (petrol engine). The top speed of the car will drop to about 70-80 kilometers per hour and it will take a long time to accelerate the car. When driving uphill, the vehicle speed will drop significantly. This is because a 650cc twin-cylinder internal combustion engine is too small to keep up the speed of such a machine.
