EU limits on CO2 emissions are strict: in 2020, new cars must emit no more than 95 grams per kilometer. This value applies to 95% of the fleet (i.e. 95% of new vehicles sold, the top 5% with the highest emissions are not counted). The NEDC standard is used as a benchmark. From 2021 the limit will apply to the entire fleet, from 2025 it will be further reduced, initially by 15% and from 2030 by a whopping 37,5%.
But what models today have CO2 emissions of 95 grams per kilometer? They are few and in great demand. German publication Motor has compiled a list of 10 vehicles with the lowest emissions, all with less than 100 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles are not taken into account, and one engine for each model is listed - with the lowest emissions.
VW Polo 1.6 TDI: 97 grams
The most economical Polo model can barely support a weight of less than 100 grams. This is not a natural gas version, but a diesel one. With a 1,6-liter TDI engine producing 95 hp. and a manual transmission, the compact car emits 97 grams of CO2 per kilometer in accordance with the current NEDC standard.
Renault Clio 100 TCe 100 LPG: 94 grams
The new Clio is also available with a diesel engine, and the lowest emission version (dCi 85 with manual transmission) is slightly better than the 95g diesel Polo. The Clio TCe 100 LPG LPG version, which only drops 94 grams, performs even better.
Fiat 500 Hybrid and Panda Hybrid: 93 grams
The Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda are in the A segment, that is, the Polo, Clio, etc. Although smaller and lighter, until recently they had emissions issues. The LPG version of the Fiat 500 still emits 118 grams! However, the new "hybrid" version (which is actually a mild hybrid) emits only 93 grams per kilometer, in both the 500 and the Panda. Which is not a brilliant achievement considering the power of only 70 hp.
Peugeot 308 BlueHDi 100: 91 grams
Even compact cars can pass less than 100 grams of CO2. An example of this is the Peugeot 308 with a 1,5 liter diesel engine: a 102 hp version. emits only 91 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Its competitor Renault Megane is much worse - at best 102 grams (Blue dCi 115).
Opel Astra 1.5 Diesel 105 PS: 90 grams
The model received new engines in the last facelift, but not PSA engines, and units that are still being developed under the auspices of General Motors - even if they have data similar to Peugeot engines. The Astra also has a very economical 1,5-liter diesel engine - a 3-cylinder engine with 105 hp. discards only 90 grams.
VW Golf 2.0 TDI 115 hp: 90 grams
What Peugeot and Opel can do, VW does with its compact car. The newest version of the new Golf, the 2.0 hp 115 TDI, puts out just 90 grams, like the previous Astra, but has four cylinders under the hood and 10 more horsepower.
Peugeot 208 BlueHDi 100 and Opel Corsa 1.5 Diesel: 85 grams
We have seen that VW is worse off with its small car than with its compact. Poorly! In contrast, with the new 208, Peugeot is showing what is right. Version with a 1,5-liter diesel engine producing 102 hp. (the same one that gives 91 grams at 308) emits only 85 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Opel achieves the same value with the technically identical Corsa.
Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108: 85 grams
Small cars with conventional gasoline engines, which are now very rare, include the nearly identical Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 models with 72 hp. They give off 85 grams. It is also worth noting that these two vehicles achieve significantly lower CO2 values than the Fiat 500 with mild hybrid system.
VW Up 1.0 Ecofuel: 84 grams
Another small car. The lowest emissions version of the VW Up is the 68 hp gas version, called the Up 1.0 Ecofuel on the price list, but sometimes the Eco Up. It emits only 84 grams of CO2 per kilometer. By comparison, the Renault Twingo doesn't stand a chance throwing at least 100 grams. The same with Kia Picanto 1.0 (101 grams).
Toyota Yaris Hybrid: 73 grams
The new Toyota Yaris is the best in CO2 emissions so far. With a new hybrid system based on a 1,5-liter petrol engine (92 hp) and an electric motor (80 hp). This variant has a total capacity of 116 hp. according to the NEDC, it emits only 73 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
