"When you buy a Ferrari, you pay for the engine, and I give the rest to you for free." According to legend, these words belong to Enzo Ferrari, but history shows that it is not necessary to buy a supercar in Maranello to get an engine of the legendary brand. It is found under the hood of several production models, as well as in some very exotic projects, where its appearance is definitely surprising.
Maserati Gran Turismo
GranTurismo is a classic example of the joint development of two Italian brands. This is a family of V8 F136 engines known as the "Ferrari-Maserati engine". The coupe from Modena will receive modifications F136 U (4,2 l displacement, 405 hp) and F136 Y (4,7 l, from 440 to 460 hp).
In just 12 years, just over 40 Gran Toursimo coupes and GranCabrio convertibles have been sold off the assembly line. However, this does not limit the cooperation of the two companies - F000 engines are installed on both the Maserati Coupe and the fifth generation Quattroporte. In turn, Ferrari puts the engine on the F136, using it for racing until 430.
Maserati MC12
This car is designed for the homologation of a racing car for the FIA GT Championship. It is equipped with Ferrari Enzo units, including a 6,0-liter naturally aspirated V12 with the Tipo F140 B index. Maserati has engine power increased to 630 hp. and 652 Nm, which does not prevent the racing MC12 from winning the 2005 Constructors' Championship, scoring twice as many points as a Ferrari!
In total, 62 cars are on sale, of which 50 are MC12 and 12 are MC12 Corsa, a modified version. Its power is 755 hp and this car is not certified for driving on public roads. Studio Edo Competition has finalized three MC12 Corsa units that can drive around the city, but their price jumps to 1,4 million euros.
Launch New Stratos
Throughout its life, the sports car Lancia Stratos has always been inextricably linked with Ferrari. The rally version of the Stratos HF is powered by a 2,4-liter 6B V135 engine borrowed from the Ferrari Dino. In 2010, Brose Group and Pininfarina even tried to revive the model by showing off the new Stratos with a carbon body.
Unlike its predecessor, the new Stratos gets a V8 engine from the Ferrari F430 Scuderia. This engine is also from the F136 series with its own ED designation. On the New Stratos, it develops 548 hp. and 519 Nm of torque. Alas, out of the planned 25 cars, only three were produced, one of which was sold at an auction in January 2020.
Launch Thema 8.32
In the late 80s of the last century, the world was conquered by the fashion for fast and powerful sedans. BMW offers M5 and Opel Lotus Omega. Lancia decided to play on one and in 1988 began production of the Thema sedan with the F105 L engine from the Ferrari 308.The 3,0-liter engine develops 215 hp and the designation 8.32 means 8 cylinders and 32 valves. There is an active spoiler on the roof of the car, which is activated by pressing a button in the interior.
Having received this engine, Thema 8.32 is forced to part with its affordable price. In the UK, the model costs almost £ 40, which is cheaper than the donor Ferrari 308, but many times more expensive than the Thema 16V Turbo, which develops 205 hp. For 3 years, about 4000 units of this model have been produced and sold.
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio / Stelvio Quadrifoglio
When it comes to engines, Ferrari hasn't forgotten about its FCA counterparts from Alfa Romeo either. This brand receives the latest developments - engines of the F154 family, which are installed in almost the entire current Ferrari lineup, starting with the 488 GTB, as well as on Maserati's top models from the GTS and Trofeo series.
The fact is that for the neighbors of Turin, the engine was overhauled, deprived of two cylinders, and its working volume is limited to 2,9 liters. The Biturbo V6 is installed on cars from the Quadrifoglio family, developing 510 hp. and 600 Nm. There is also a version of the Giulia GTA, in which the power is increased to 540 hp.
Pontiac Firebird Pegasus
This concept model is one of the strangest products to ever come out of the Pontiac factory. According to legend, in the early 70s, the chief designer of Chevrolet, Jerry Palmer, as part of an experiment, painted a Camaro with an appearance in the style of a Ferrari Testarossa. This idea pleased William Mitchell, vice president of GM Design, who decided to implement a radical project.
In 1971, the Pontiac Firebird Pegasus was introduced, equipped with the Tipo 251 v12 engine, exhaust system and 5-speed manual transmission from the Ferrari 365 GTB / 4. The brakes are from the Chevrolet Corvette, the design of the front end and dashboard directly refer to the classic Italian sports cars.
1971 Gypsy Dino
Very little is known about this car. It was manufactured in 1971 by the automotive company Autocostruzioni GIPSY, and Dallara also participated in its development. At the heart of the V6 is from Ferrari Dino, and the power of the racing prototype is 220-230 hp.
The car made its debut in the 1000 kilometers of Monza, where it collided with the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33. It then appeared at the Nurburgring, participating in other races. In 2009, the Gypsy Dino was sold for $ 110, after which traces of the prototype were lost.
Ford Mustang Project Corruptt
We move on to some crazy tuning projects, the first of which is Project Corrupt, which is a 1968 Ford Mustang with an F8 E V136 engine from a Ferrari F430. To get the mid-engined coupe's engine under the hood of an oil car, American Legends uses an exhaust manifold on a Ferrari California.
In addition, the Italian V8 will receive two turbines and a 6-speed manual transmission. The roof is lowered 6,5 cm and the front bumper air intakes are 3D printed.
1969 Jerari
Ferrari is currently working on the upcoming Purosangue SUV, but it won't be the first SUV to feature a galloping stallion on the hood. Back in 1969, car collector William Hara introduced the world to a symbiosis of Jeep Wagoneer and Ferrari 365 GT 2 + 2 called Jerrari. The first model looks ridiculous because Jeep is equipped with the entire front end of the sports car, including a 4,4-liter V12 with 320 hp, a 5-speed manual transmission and some interior elements.
In this form, Jerrari existed until 1977, when Hara decided to create a second similar car. This time around, however, the exterior of the Wagoneer is unaffected, with only the orange SUV's lid extended to accommodate the V12 engine. Subsequently, the first Jerrari received an engine from a Chevrolet Corvette and went into a private collection, while Hara's second car remained in his museum in Nevada.
Toyota GT4586
This is one of the most famous Italian heart transplant experiments conducted by American professional Drifter Ryan Turk. He used a Ferrari 458 Italia as a donor, took an 8-cylinder F136 FB from him and started implanting it under the hood of a Toyota GT86, but it turned out that it was not easy.
It is necessary to cut off part of the windshield of the Japanese sports coupe, replace the radiator and redo most of the elements. All this leads to a rise in price, and as a result, modifications are more expensive than the price of the GT86 itself. The resulting car was named GT4586, painted bright red, and set off to storm drift tracks around the world.
