It should be noted that statistics nowhere indicate what kind of roads they are, whether there are potholes and asphalt thickness of 3 or 12 cm. In addition, the density of the road network is logically related to the size of the country and its population. The more densely populated and smaller the country is, the higher this indicator is. This explains why Bangladesh, with its 161 million inhabitants, boasts a denser road network than Italy or Spain. Or why the top ten countries with the highest population density are actually microstates. However, we were curious to check which countries on the planet have more and less roads. Let's start at the end of the list.
10. Mongolia - 0,0328 km / sq. km
More than four times the size of Germany but half the population of Bulgaria, this Asian country is made up mostly of very sparsely populated steppes. Finding your way through them is a real challenge, as Jeremy Clarkson and company found out on a recent "special" episode of The Grand Tour (pictured).
9. Central African Republic - 0,032 km/sq. km
As the name suggests, this country is located in the heart of the African continent. It covers an area of 623 square kilometers, but mostly falls on the wild savannah. The population is only about 000 million. This did not stop in the past to call the country the Central African Empire, which was ruled by the famous cannibal emperor Bokassa.
8. Chad - 0,031 km/sq. km
Chad, with an area of 1,28 million square kilometers, is one of the 20 largest countries in the world. But most of its territory is covered by the sands of the Sahara Desert, where road construction is problematic. However, the country has remained in automotive history with the so-called Toyota War, a conflict with Libya in the 1980s in which Chadian forces, almost entirely armed with Toyota Hilux pickup trucks, successfully recaptured Jamahiriya tanks.
7. Botswana – 0,0308 km / sq. km
Botswana, bordering South Africa and Namibia, is a fairly large (581 square kilometers like France) but very sparsely populated country (000 million inhabitants). More than 2,2% of its territory is occupied by the Kalahari Desert, the second largest in Africa.
6. Suriname - 0,0263 km / sq. km
Least populated and least known country in South America. A former Dutch colony, Suriname is home to many famous footballers such as Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank, as well as legendary kickboxer Remy Bonyaski. Its population is only about half a million, and its area is 163 square kilometers, almost entirely occupied by the tropical jungle.
5. Papua New Guinea - 0,02 km / sq. km
Occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, as well as several nearby archipelagos, this country is one of the most untouched by modern civilization. Its population is about 8 million, speaking 851 different languages. The urban population is only about 13%, which explains the sad situation with the roads.
4. Mali – 0,018 km/sq. km
Mali is not as sparsely populated as the others on this list, with an estimated population of over 20 million. But most of the country is in the Sahara desert, and the low economic level does not allow intensive road construction. It is also one of the countries with the hottest climate in the world.
3. Niger - 0,015 km / sq. km
Neighbor Mali, with roughly the same area and population but even poorer, ranks 183rd out of 193 countries in terms of gross domestic product per capita. A few roads are concentrated in the southwest, around the Niger River. In the photo - the capital of Niamey.
2. Mauritania – 0,01 km / sq. km
Former French colony, more than 91% of which is located in the Sahara Desert. With an area of more than 1 million square kilometers, only 450 square kilometers of cultivated land.
1. Sudan - 0,0065 km / sq. km
It was the largest country in Africa and is currently one of the 1,89 largest in the world with an area of 15 million square kilometers. The population is also rather big - almost 42 million people. But the asphalt road is only 3600 km. Sudan primarily relies on its rail network, which dates back to the colonial era.
